Six rebel commanders arrested in Helmand
LASHKARGAH (PAN): Six insurgent leaders were detained by intelligence operatives over the past several days in the southern province of Helmand, the provincial National Directorate of Security (NDS) department said on Tuesday.
In a statement, NDS identified three of the detainees as Mullah Matiullah, Habib Rahman and Mullah Zakria, who were involved in terroristic attacks in Helmand.
The detainees had confessed to their involvement in the killings of an Afghan security guard with the provincial reconstruction team and an NDS operative, the statement said.
The three rebel leaders had links to a senior militant leader, Mullah Ahmad, alias Mubarak, in Nawa district.
The statement identified another detained insurgent as Abdul Bari alias Buthshikand, who had allegedly killed a student in Laskargah city and was involved in encouraging youth to support insurgents. The rebel was arrested by NDS officials in Lashkargah.
Two more insurgent commanders named Gul Alam, alias Mardan and Seed Razam, who had been active in Nad-a-Ali district were arrested in Lashkargah.
Two machineguns and two pistols were also recovered from the arrested insurgents.
