Ex-jihadi commanders gunned down
Mohammad Yasin and Asmat were gunned down by unknown motorcyclists while returning from a condolence ceremony in the Sarasiab area of Sholgara district.
Balkh police spokesman Col. Sher Jan Durrani said both men died on the spot and the assailants managed to escape. A police team has been sent to the area for investigating the incident, he added.
Residents, meanwhile, urged the government to ensure the protection of influential figures. A Sarasiab inhabitant, Mohammad Ali, said the victims were influential individuals.
The 25-year-old praised Yasin and Asmat for their proactive role in resolving villagers' problems. "Several of our elders have been killed. We want the authorities to ensure their safety."
