Regional meeting of High Peace Council begins
Almost 400 elders and officials from Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, Uruzgan and Nimroz provinces, including High Peace Council chief Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, attended the meeting
Afghan National Army Chief of Staff Gen. Sher Muhammad Karimi, Minister of Frontiers and Tribal Affairs Asadullah Khalid and NATO Commander Gen. John Allen were among the participants, the governor's office said.
Peace was the most important issue for the nation and people must come forward to help the government achieve that goal, Prof. Rabbani said.
Gen. Allen said militants had realised that war was no longer in their interest and it was time for peace and unity in Afghanistan. "Peace is our priority and foreign forces will stay as long as their presence is needed."
