Ulema Council member shot dead
Maulvi Syed Mohammad was shot dead at around 7pm by unidentified men near the Sule Chawk area of Lashkargah, the provincial capital, Daud Ahmadi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Mohammad was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Ahmadi said, adding the attackers managed to flee the scene, but a search for the killers was underway.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved family, the Helmand governor strongly condemned the attack as brutal and un-Islamic act, a statement from the governor’s office said.
Insecurity has increased in the province after the security responsibility for the city was handed over from foreign troops to their Afghan counterparts on July 20, 2011.
Three suicide attacks, some explosions and target killings have occurred in the province since the security switch, inflicting casualties on nearly 80 people.
