Afghans hold Kuwaitis to draw in AFC U-16 clash
KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan held hosts Kuwait to a draw in a match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship 2012 qualifiers at the Sabah al Salem Stadium in Kuwait City, an official said on Tuesday.
Afghans shot into lead when Murtaza Mohammad Zahir scored a goal in the 37th minute of the first half, but the opposition managed a draw by scoring an equalizer in dying moments of the match.
Afghanistan, Kuwait, Yemen, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Maldives are placed in Group B, Muhammad Yasin Muhammadi, deputy director of the Afghan Football Federation, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The national team will play the UAE football on Sept. 14 and Yemen three days later, Muhammadi said, adding football squads from 40 Asian countries -- divided in seven groups -- are participating in the event.
"Afghanistan will qualify for the next round," he hoped. In the last tournament, the national side pulled off a draw against Pakistani, he recalled.
