Scores of militants detained in Badakhshan
FAIZABAD (PAN): About 70 rebels, including a commander, were detained and two others killed by Afghan and foreign forces in the Kasham district of northern Badakhshan province, an official claimed on Tuesday.
The predawn operation was conducted by in the Khambak village of Kasham district, Brig. Gen. Syed Husain Safawi, the provincial deputy police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He identified the group commander as Sher Haidar. Several injured rebels were airlifted by ISAF planes, said the Kasham district chief, Abdul Salam Paiman. He had no specific casualty figures.
But Capt. Javed Salim, the army commando unit spokesman in the northern zone, said the offensive targeted a joint sanctuary of Afghani, Uzbek and Chechen fighters.
Sixteen militants were killed and 15 others detained as a result of the operation that was conducted at 1am, he said. The troops also seized computers, walkie-talkies, ammunitions and explosives.
The ISAF media office in Kabul said it was unaware about the operation.
