SHIBERGHAN (PAN): A 45-member rebel group and their commander joined the peace process in the Darz Aab district of northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Wednesday.
Led by Mullah Akbar, the insurgents, who operated in Chakana and Jungle villages, also surrendered 20 weapons, Matiullah, the acting district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
About 90 percent of the district had been cleared of militants, claimed the official, who hoped that fighters in other areas would also surrender soon.
Akbar said: "The militancy has left people disappointed. We, therefore, decided to quit fighting and return to a normal life."
