Floods cause losses in Khost, Paktika

SHARAN/KHOST CITY (PANinfo-icon): Rain-induced floods have caused losses to residents of southeastern Paktika and Khost provinces, near the Pakistaninfo-icon border, officials said on Wednesday.

Alamdar Giyanwal, a tribal elder from Orgun district who accompanied a district council delegation that assessed the losses, said four houses were destroyed and 175 acres of cropped land washed away in the Guli Qala village.

Ten houses and 90 acres of land were also damaged in Haiderkhel, Alikhel and Qarakhel villages, where several domestic animals were killed, another member of the delegation, Dr. Shahbaz, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A local journalist, Jalalzai who visited the area, said a number of houses were damaged and cattle heads washed away in several other villages of the province.

Orgun district chief, Khurshid Aman, admitted that floods had damaged houses, crops and fruit farms in addition to killing animals. Information about the losses has been shared with the governor, who has promised help for the victims. 

A press release quoted Eng. Akbar, the Afghanistaninfo-icon Natural Disaster Management Authority chief for Khost, as saying that 36 people were killed, 53 others injured, 781 houses and 2,750 acres of land destroyed by floods in different areas of the province.
