18 Taliban killed in Barg-i-Matal clash
JALALABAD (PAN): Eighteen insurgents were killed in an operation conducted by joint Afghan-foreign forces in the Barg-i-Matal district of eastern Nuristan province, an official said on Saturday.
The overnight clash erupted during a joint Afghan National Army (ANA) commando and NATO-led operation, involving warplanes, in Pul-i-Rasm and Awal Gul villages of the district, killing 18 fighters and wounding 15 others.
Brig. Gen. Shamsur Rahman Nuristani, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the joint force suffered no casualties.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said 16 fighters, including some civilians, were killed in the clash. Nine foreign soldiers were also killed in the midnight battle, Mujahid claimed.
However, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) press office in the east rejected the claim as baseless.
