Gunmen warn against sending young girls to school
JALALABAD (PAN): Unidentified gunmen have warned tribal elders in eastern Nangarhar province against sending young girls to go to school and make them study religious books at homes, a resident said on Saturday.
The unknown gunmen who came to the Barikab High School in Batikot district last Thursday, also asked residents not to trim their beards and wear Islamic clothes, Najibullah told Pajhwok Afghan News.
District chief, Israrullah Qari, who confirmed the threat, said they dispatched police to the area on receiving information. Before the police reached there, the militants had fled, he added.
But Education Director Mohammad Asif Shinwari said he was yet to receive any information in this regard. District education head, Haji Zahir, said the militants had also asked boys not to shave off their beards and wear Islamic dress.
A month back, the Taliban beat up a cleric who led the funeral of an army official in the district.
