Attackers among 17 killed in Khyber clash
ISLAMABAD (PAN): A dozen of militants and five tribesmen, including a militiaman, were killed when in an attack on a checkpoint in the Khyber tribal region of Pakistan's northwestern Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, an official said.
The predawn clash erupted at around 1:30am in the Akakhel area of the Bara sub-district of Khyber Agency, a tribal elder, Murad, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Four pro-government tribespeople and one militiaman were killed and five others injured in the ensuing gunbattle, he said. The security personnel subsequently launched an operation and cordoned off the area, he added.
A government official said on condition of anonymity that a dozen assailants were killed and their safe havens destroyed in the retaliatory strike.
