18 Taliban killed in Nuristan clashes
JALALABAD (PAN): At least 18 fighters were killed and nine others injured during clashes with security forces in the eastern province of Nuristan, officials said on Monday.
The militant casualties happened in Awala Gul and Pul-i-Rustam areas of Barg-i-Matal district, a spokesman for the 201st Selab Military Corps said.
Col. Noman Hatifi told Pajhwok Afghan News dead bodies of the attackers were left at the site and an ammunition cache was seized.
Governor Tamim Nuristani said he had visited the scene, where he saw some foreign Taliban among the dead. Three militants were also detained during the gunbattle, he added.
"We are trying to keep the moral of our soldier high as part of preparations for a huge operation over the next few days," the governor said, without giving further details.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said only four fighters were injured in the clashes.
