19 convicted of drug trafficking
Having defence lawyers to plead their cases, the accused were convicted on the basis of evidence by an appellant court at the end of an open trial, CJTF spokesman, Ajmal Tarin, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Under the relevant law, a convict could move the Supreme Court against the appellate court decision.
Hailing from Nimroz, Samangan, Badakhshan, Kabul, Maidan Wardak, Balkh, Panjsher, Jawzjan, Uruzgan and Helmand provinces, the men were held with 14 kilograms of heroin, 721 kg of opium, 514 kg of hashish and over 7087 litres of alcohols.
Since the beginning of the current solar year (Mar 22), the court of appeal has convicted 261 people on charges of drug trafficking. Four others were acquitted for lack of evidence.
