Tanin to chair panel on Security Council reform
WASHINGTON (PAN): The Afghan ambassador to the UN has been reappointed to head a key UN panel on the crucial issue of reforming the Security Council.
In fact, the re-appointment of Zahir Tanin was among the first decisions taken by the president of the 66th General Assembly since his election UN member-states early this month.
Tanin has been asked to lead the inter-governmental negotiations on Security Council for the fourth consecutive year.
During his tenure as chair of the inter-governmental negotiations, Tanin received support from many UN member states, which comprise the five main regional groups in which the 193 countries represented are categorised.
His re-appointment ensures continuity in an ongoing process, aimed at achieving a more democratic, representative and efficient Security Council.
