KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai cut short his visit to New York on Tuesday evening, following the assassination of the High Peace Councilinfo-icon chairman in a suicide attack, an official said.

Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed along with three members of his panel in the bombing at his residence. Council Secretary Masoom Stanikzai was wounded in the blast in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan neighbourhood.

Hamid Ilmi, a spokesman for Karzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the president was returning to Kabul due to Rabbani's death.

Karzai had cancelled his address to the UN General Assembly, Ilmi said, without explaining whether or not the president had met his US counterpart Barack Obama.

Ilmi said the president strongly condemned Rabbani's murder. Karzai was quoted as calling his predecessor's death as part of a conspiracy to kill high-profile Afghan figures.

Ahmad Wali Karzai, Jan Mohammad, Gen. Daud and others have already fallen victim to the plot.

"The enemies of Afghanistaninfo-icon take pity on no one," Karzai said, praising Rabbani as an important jihadi leader, who was making efforts to bring peace and stability to the country.
