High Peace Council Secretary Masoom Stanikzai was wounded, Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told reporters at the site. But Masoom's injuries are not life-threatening, according to the spokesman.
Without giving a specific figure, witnesses said some other people were also killed in the explosion.
One security official, who did not want to be named, said three members of the council were also killed in the attack. However, the source did not disclose their names.
Another source said Wahidyar, a member of the council, was injured and Haji Nazir, secretary to Rabbani, was killed. Nazir's death could not be confirmed independently.
Wahidyar brought the Taliban attackers, who had placed explosives in their turbans, to Rabbani's home for talks, he said.
The security forces cordoned off the area and three ambulances were seen coming out the former president's residence.
