Karzai leaves US after meeting Obama
WASHINGTON (PAN): President, Hamid Karzai on Tuesday left New York for Kabul in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Burhanuddin Rabbani, former president and chairman of the High Peace Council.
Karzai was in New York to attend the 66th annual session of the UN General Assembly and hold talks with a galaxy of world leaders, who have converged on the city for the annual meet of the world body.
A meeting with US President Barack Obama was the only official engagement of the Afghan leader, who arrived in New York on Monday. Besides addressing the General Assembly, Karzai was scheduled to meet a number of world leaders and attend the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Foundation.
Prior to his departure, Karzai said the martyrdom of Rabbani, following the assassinations of Ahmad Wali Karzai, Jan Mohammad Khan, General Daud Daud, Ghulam Haider Hamid and other elders indicated that the enemies of Afghanistan did not hesitate to harm any patriotic Afghan.
Rabbani was a distinguished jihadi leader, who made efforts towards independence and national unity. From the beginning, he was a champion of the peace process and laid down his life to that end, he added.
Karzai said this chain of martyrdom of Afghanistan’s elders is indicative of a huge conspiracy by the enemies of Afghanistan. Unity and integrity among the people and Afghanistan's elders at this critical point was vital, he stressed.
