Karzai returns, condoles with Rabbani family
On his return from New York to the capital, the president condoled with Prof. Rabbani's relatives at the 400-Bed Hospital, his spokesman said.
Karzai was in New York to attend the 66th annual session of the UN General Assembly and hold talks with a galaxy of world leaders, who have converged on the city for the annual meet of the world body.
A meeting with US President Barack Obama was the only official engagement of the Afghan leader, who arrived in New York on Monday.
Besides addressing the General Assembly, Karzai was scheduled to meet a number of world leaders and attend the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Foundation.
Ahmad Zia Siamak, the deputy presidential spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Karzai reached Kabul at 5pm. The president was quoted as calling Rabbani's death a huge national loss.
Rabbani was a distinguished jihadi leader, who made efforts towards independence and national unity. From the beginning, he was a champion of the peace process and laid down his life for that cause, he added.
