On his return from New York to the capital, the president condoled with Prof. Rabbani's relatives at the 400-Bed Hospital, his spokesman said.

A meeting with US President Barack Obama was the only official engagement of the Afghan leader, who arrived in New York on Monday.

Ahmad Zia Siamak, the deputy presidential spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Karzai reached Kabul at 5pm. The president was quoted as calling Rabbani's death a huge national loss.
