Several Haqqani fighters killed in Paktia: ISAF
KABUL (PAN): Afghan and coalition security personnel killed several insurgents during a joint operation in search of a Haqqani network leader in the Zadran district of southeastern Paktia province, the alliance said on Wednesday.
The Haqqani leader headed rebel operations in Khost and Paktia provinces, besides organising the movement of fighters from Pakistan to Afghanistan, a statement from the ISAF media office said of Monday's offensive.
A hideout where several insurgents were observed in fighting positions, posturing for an attack against the force, was located in the district. Subsequently, ISAF warplanes hit the area, killing numerous militants.
A number of AK 47 assault rifles, Russian machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and fragmentation grenades were confiscated during the operation.
In the Chamtal district of Balkh province, a combined force killed a Taliban leader and detained two suspects during an operation. Mullah Yar Mohammed was blamed for kidnappings, weapons facilitation and ambushes on Afghan forces.
