Foreign dignitaries to attend ex-president's funeral
KABAUL (PAN): Top foreign diplomats will attend ex-president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani's funeral on Friday, an official said on Thursday.
The High Peace Council chairman was assassinated on Tuesday in a suicide attack in the high-security area of Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan at his residence and would be laid to rest at a hilltop in the neighbourhood.
Delegations from 10 countries, including Afghanistan's neighbors and European states, have so far contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about their participation in the funeral, Hameed Seddiq, the ministry’s protocol chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The visiting dignitaries include vice-presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers and diplomats.
More foreign visitors could be in attendance, Seddiq said, without giving further information for security reasons.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet decided that the national flag would fly at half-mast across the country and in Afghan embassies and consulates abroad during the three days of mourning, starting Thursday through Saturday.
No one has so far asserted responsibility for the assassination of Rabbani.
