Iranian spikers trounce AfghansBy Muhammad Jawad Sharifzada Sep 22, 2011 - 14:03
KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan were routed by Iranian in a match of the preliminary round of the 16th Asian Senior Men's Volleyball Championship at Azadi Hall No. 1 in Tehran, an official said on Thursday.
Placed in Group A along with Iran, India and Taiwan, Afghans were among 15 countries participating in the event, which would conclude on Sept. 29th, the national coach said.
Basir Walizada told Pajhwok Afghan News the hosts trounced the national side in straight sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-8). "The Afghans were experiencing their first practical challenge. Our facilities pale away in comparison to Iran's."
The coach acknowledged the Afghan team lacked preparations. Considering their inadequate facilities, the Afghans did show some promise, he said.
In their match against Indian later on Thursday, the national squad would come up with an encouraging result, he hoped.
Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan are placed in Group B, Japan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Thailand in Group C and Australia, South Korea, Turkmenistan and Qatar in Group D of the preliminary round.
