Taliban ban mobile phones in Zurmat
Inhabitant Amirullah said restrictions on mobile phones had left them unable to communicate with relatives and friends. The militants have warned to impose a fine of 20,000 afghanis on anyone using a mobile phone, beat him and break his set.
"If we need to speak with near and dear ones, we go to Gardez," the resident said, adding Etisalat, MTN, Afghan Wireless Communication Company and Roshan have been prevented from functioning in Zurmat.
A Taliban member said on condition of anonymity said the ban was aimed to stop mobile phone companies from leaking information about rebel operations and whereabouts to Afghan and foreign forces.
The ban on cell phones helped reduce guerrilla casualties during operations, said a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
