UN Security Council condemns Rabbani’s assassination

WASHINGTON (PANinfo-icon): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday strongly denounced the murder of the High Peace Councilinfo-icon Chairman and former president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, saying it was against the hopes of Afghan people for peace and reconciliation.

Reading out unanimous resolution of the 15-member body, the Security Council President for the month of September, Ambassador Nawaf Salam of Lebanon said the members reiterated their firm commitment to support the Government of Afghanistaninfo-icon in its efforts to advance the peace and reconciliation process.

“The murder of Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani, the Chairman of the Afghanistan High Peace Council, was clearly directed against the hopes of the Afghan people for peace and reconciliation,” Salam said. 

Condemning in the strongest terms the recent attack that occurred in Kabulinfo-icon on Tuesday, causing deaths and injuries, the Security Council members expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of this heinous act and to their families  as well as to the people and Government of Afghanistan.

Reaffirming that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, the Security Council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.
