Rabbani a martyr of peace: Karzai
KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai, calling Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani a martyr of peace, said on Friday the terrorist who assassinated the High Peace Council chairman had come to Kabul in the name of peace.
Speaking at a brief press conference, Karzai said: "The killer posed as a peace messenger. When Rabbani came to know about his arrival, he rushed back home from Iran to bring peace to the country, but was martyred."
The terrorist had hidden explosives in his turban, a sign of honour for Afghans and Muslims, the president added. "When I was going to the US, High Peace Council Secretary Masoom Stanikzai told Rabbani the emissary had brought a CD which a message from Maulvi Inayatullah Makhdoom."
Karzai said he had listened to the message, in which Rabbani was addressed with respect and questions were asked regarding the peace process.
When they travelled together to Pakistan, Rabbani asked Pakistani authorities with great sincerity to come forward for peace in both countries, Karzai recalled, promising to continue efforts at reconciliation with the Taliban.
"The blood of Rabbani and other martyrs requires us to continue our efforts until we reach peace and stability," Karzai said. However, he hastened to warn: "At the same time, we consider it our responsibility to fight the enemies of peace."
