Wanth Waigail district handed over to elders
ASADABAD (PAN): The Wanth Waigal district of eastern Nuristan province, which was recaptured by Afghan Security forces from the Taliban two days ago, was handed over to tribal elders, officials said on Friday.
Following the request by tribal elders, the district’s control was given to local elders, Maj. Gen. Shamsur Rahman Zahid Nuristani, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Strongly rejecting the Taliban's claim of recapturing the district, Zahid said 42 fighters, including two women, were killed in the operation.
However, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said the fighters regained control of the district after heavy fighting on Thursday night. Five Taliban and 15 civilians were killed in the incident, he said, adding they had also seized weapons from security forces.
Spokesman for the 3rd Brigade of the 201st Selab Military Corps also confirmed the town's control had been given to elders after the operation.
