2 dead in attack on CIA compound
KABUL (PAN): One US citizen was killed and another wounded during an attack on a US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) compound, an annex to the US embassy, in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday night, the US embassy said on Monday.
A US official confirmed to media the attack on the facility previously known as Ariana Hotel, located near the Presidential Palace.
"There was a shooting incident at an annex of the US embassy in Kabul, involving an Afghan employee who was killed," the US embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said, adding a US citizen was also killed and another wounded.
A security official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity that the attack occurred at around 9pm after a number of gunmen opened fire on the compound. An intelligence operative said one person was killed, but the victim's identity was not yet known.
Gunshots were heard near the Ariana Hotel, a witness, Sultan, said.
The latest incident comes days after ex-president and High Peace Council Chairman Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed in a suicide attack at his residence in Kabul on Tuesday.
