Local police force starts functioning in Nangarhar
JALALABAD (PAN): Two hundred local police officials embarked on their duties in the Goshta district of eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, officials said.
The force started work after a ceremony, which was attended by Local Police Commander Gen. Ali Shah Ahmadzai and other provincial officials, district chief, Haji Syed Rahman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
In Nangarhar, Goshta is the first district where the NATO-backed force -- established by the Interior Ministry last year -- has been deployed, according to the official.
He said local police were already working in neighbouring Kunar province. The force would be deployed to other districts of Nangarhar as well, he added..
The force would work under the provincial police headquarters while US troops would provide them with uniforms, weapons and funds, Rahman said.
A member of the provincial council, Zabit Amir Muhammad, said local police could play a key role in restoring peace if they followed provincial police directives.
