Rabbani’s assassination planned outside: NDS
Speaking at a news conference, deputy head of National Directorate of Security (NDS) Ziauddin said, by the arrest of the mastermind of the assassination, the outsiders involved in the attack would be identified as soon as possible.
The ex-President Rabbani was assassinated in a suicide attack at his residence in the posh Wazir Akbar Khan area Tuesday evening. Since the mastermind is arrested developments are made in the investigation and the probe would soon be concluded, the NDS official said.
Apologizing Afghans about failure of security forces particularly the intelligence operatives to prevent the attack on Rabbani, he said, the outcome of the investigation into the incident would be shared with Afghans immediately after the probe is completed.
Since it would delay the probing into the incident, he therefore did not share further information with media people. He could not reject involvement of Quetta shura of Taliban in the assassination, but said it would be clear after the investigation was completed.
Strongly condemning the involvement and cooperation of any official in the assassination, the NDS official said, the intelligent operatives had been using all their sources to prevent such incidents in the country.
A weekly meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) chaired by President Hamid Karzai, on Sunday, also discussed the assassination and its consequences. Karzai called the killing of the former president a huge loss to the country.
Ministers of defence and interior, the acting head of the NDS and the attorney general were tasked with probing the killing.
The team was asked to use all sources available to it to identify and arrest the perpetrators, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
