KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A number of youth on Tuesday marked the 15th death anniversary of former ex-president Dr. Najibullah, asking the UN to identify and punish his killers.

Najibullah was born in August 1947 in the Ahmadzai sub-tribe of the Ghalji Pashtuninfo-icon tribe. Born in Kabul, his ancestral village was located between the towns of Syed Karam and Gardez in southeastern Paktia province.

Once the Afghan spy chief, Najibullah was elected as president of the Soviet-backed government in 1986. When the Talibaninfo-icon captured Kabul 15 years back, Najibullah sought refuge at the UN office, but was killed along with his brother.

The Taliban fighters hanged the bodies of Najibullah and his brother Shahpur Ahmadzai at the Ariana Square. Najibullah, who was president for five years, had spent four and a half years at the UN office.

The Democratic Party of Afghan Youth observed the anniversary by reciting poems in praise of Najibullah and reading out papers on his life. The participants asked the government and the UN to net the ex-president's killers.

"The worldinfo-icon body should be investigated, because Najibullah was killed at the UN office," said Arian Khyber, the Democratic Party chairman. When Taliban captured Kabul, UN staff fled, leaving Najibullah alone, he recalled.

A message from Najibullah's wife also read out at the anniversary. She demanded punishment for the killers of her husband.

A four-article resolution released at the end of the event asked UN officials to identify the killers of Najibullah and punish them.
