Protestors seek punishment for Rabbani's killers

FAIZABAD (PANinfo-icon): A large number of school and university students and teachers of northeastern Badakhshan province on Thursday demanded stringent punishment for the killers of High Peace Councilinfo-icon chairman Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Rabbani was killed along with three members of the peace panel in a suicide attack on his residence in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabulinfo-icon on September 20.

More than 1,000 protestors, including womeninfo-icon teachers, chanted "death to the Talibaninfo-icon, death to Pakistaninfo-icon and death to the Haqqani networkinfo-icon" in Faizabad, the provincial capital.

"The aim of our demonstration is to seek a swift investigation into the assassination," said Shakila, a 12th grader. She asked the government to catch the assassins and bring them to justice.

The protestors submitted a resolution to the regional office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA). It asked for a joint probe by Afghan and UN officials.

It demanded the government name the Badakhshan University after Prof. Rabbani. Separately, a condolence ceremony was also held for the former president in Faizabad. A large number of people and local officials participated in the event.
