31 convicted of drug trafficking

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Thirteen individuals were sentenced from three to 20 years in jail on charges of drug trafficking, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) announced on Saturday.

Having defence lawyers to plead their cases, the accused were convicted by an appellant court at the end of an open trial on the basis of evidence, CJTF spokesman, Ahmad Khalid Mowahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Under the relevant law, a convict could move the Supreme Court against the appellate court decision.

Hailing from Kandahar, Helmand, Takhar, Herat and Nangarhar provinces, the men were held with 15 kilograms of heroin, more than 182 kg of opium, 720 kg of hashish, 54 kg of morphine and 167 litres of alcoholic beverages, he said.

In the first quarter of the current solar yearinfo-icon (Mar 22-Jun 21), the court of appeal has convicted 183 people on charges of drug trafficking. Four others were acquitted for lack of evidence.
