Battle for district ongoing in Chaghcharan
Insurgents gain launched a multi-pronged attack on the district centre at around 4am, but faced stiff resistance from police, , the deputy police chief said.
Abdul Rashid Bashir told Pajhwok Afghan News he was unaware of the casualties resulting from the clash. Police reinforcements were sent to the area. They needed more forces and air support, Bashir explained.
The interior and defence ministries had been informed of the situation, but there had been no support from them so far, he concluded.
Muhammad Nasim Kohzad, the district chief, feared the town would fall to the Taliban if support was not extended to them. The fall of the district would pave the way for insurgents to overrun other districts as well, Kohzad warned.
Unaware of the casualties caused by today’s clash, he said six militants were killed and five others, including a policeman, wounded in yesterday’s onslaught.
The district, one of the volatile areas of the province, is about 150 kilometres from Chaghcharan, the provincial capital which borders the Baghran district of southern Helmand province.
