Minister survives suicide attack
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Two people were killed and 19 others injured in a suicide attack that targeted Border Affairs Minister Asadullah Khalid in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Monday.
Two people, including a suicide bomber, were killed and 19 others wounded in the attack which occurred in the Haji Arab area of the 2nd district of Kandahar City at around 10:30am, the governor’s spokesman said.
Zalamy Ayubi told Pajhwok Afghan News the victims, all civilians, were taken to the Mirwais Civil Hospital.
Escaping unhurt in the attack, the minister told journalists after the incident that the attack targeted him. Khalid added he was on the way to Dand district along with a visiting envoy when the incident occurred.
Afghan and foreign forces cordoned off the area. The Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.
Separately, one civilian was killed and three others were injured when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle in the Spingari area of Arghistan district on Sunday afternoon, Ayubi said, explaining the injured were taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, two artillery shells and seven landmines were defused in Dand and Arghandab districts, he concluded.
