10,000 Samangan families to get food aid
AIBAK (PAN): Up to 2,750 tonnes of food aid would be distributed to 10,000 families in the northern Samangan province, officials said on Friday.
Two thousand tonnes of wheat, 500 tonnes of improved seeds and 250 tonnes of rice would be distributed to farmers in rain-fed areas, the deputy minister of agriculture said.
Saleem Khan Kunduzi told Pajhwok Afghan News 10 truckloads of the aid were in agriculture department's warehouse and the rest would arrive soon from Kabul for distribution to the people, he added.
Last year, 92,000 hectares of rain-fed land and 11,000 hectares of irrigated land were cultivated with wheat. A drought in the province destroyed about 98 percent of the wheat crop on non-irrigated land and 40 percent on irrigated land, Governor Khairullah Anosh said.
Last year's wheat production of the province stood at 13,000 tonnes, according to the governor, who said another 40,000 tonnes were needed.
But assistance from the ministry brought the requirement down to 37,250 tonnes. Each family would get 200 kilograms of wheat, 50 kg of improved seeds and 25 kg of rice.
