QALAT (PANinfo-icon): Mobile phone companies have stopped operating in the Shah Joy district of southern Zabul province over the past more than a month due to Talibaninfo-icon threats, causing problems for local residents.

Local residents have demanded the government take concrete steps at resolving the problem.

The networks are operational in nearby eastern Gillan and western Qalat city, but they had halted their services in the district after they were threatened by the Taliban, resident Muhammad Anwar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Abdul Baqi, another resident, said he travels to another area out of the district to make a call to his brother in Iran.

Afghan Wireless Communication Company, MTN and Roshan networks were earlier functional in the district, but they had stopped operations now, he said.

Mobile networks selling SIMs and credit cards had an obligation to provide their customers services, Muhammad Siddique, another resident said.

The communications ministry says it is unable to put pressure on mobile companies to restart operations in the district due to bad law and order situation.
