JALALABAD (PAN): For the first time, the Ministry of Agriculture has introduced saffron crop to 14 districts of eastern Nangarhar province in a pilot project to explore new economic options for farmers, officials said on Wednesday.
The ministry distributed 175 sacks of saffron seeds to 14 farmers in the districts free of cost, said a senior official at the Ministry of Agriculture, Hukam Khan Habibi.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News the ministry would monitor the project through the provincial agriculture department while farmers would be provided with training, tractors and fertilisers.
A kilogram of saffron can fetch up to US$ 5,000 on international markets and $2000 at local market, provincial agriculture director, Eng. Muhammad Hussain Sapi, said.
