GARDEZ (PAN): Ten militants were killed during a clash with a joint Afghan-international security force in the Dandi Pathan district of southeastern Paktia province, officials said on Thursday.
The joint operation was launched on Wednesday night. The combined troops had suffered no casualties so far, ISAF media office in south eastern zone told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Dandi Pathan district chief Niaz Muhammad Khalil said he had no information about causalities, but the security forces had surrounded the area.
A resident of Amarkhel area of the district, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone that heavy weapons and air strikes were used against insurgents in the area.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the fighters entered a heavy fight with the coalition forces in Tangi area on Wednesday night.
He admitted the deaths of their 10 fighters during the offensive and claimed a helicopter was shot down during the clash, killing 15 soldiers onboard.
But ISAF said nothing about the helicopter's shooting down by the insurgents.
