5 policemen, child perish in Kandahar assault
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Five border policemen, including a commander, and a child were killed and two civilians injured in a suicide attack in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred late on Friday in the Khayasta Pump area of the Spin Boldak border district after a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a police vehicle, Gen. Mohammad Salim Ehsas, the 404th Maiwand Police Zone commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Five border policemen, including Commander Akhtar Mohammad, and a child were killed, he said, adding the police vehicle was also destroyed.
However, a statement from the governor's office contradicted the figures, saying three border police officials and a child were killed and five other people, including three policemen, wounded in the bombing.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack, saying 15 border policemen, including two commanders, were killed and their three vehicles destroyed.
