Governor escapes unhurt in Paktia suicide attackBy Daud Tapan Oct 16, 2011 - 14:01
GARDEZ (PAN): The governor of southeastern Paktia province was the target of the suicide attack in provincial capital on Sunday morning, officials said.
An explosives-packed vehicle used by the suicide attackers exploded in front of the municipality in Gardez in the afternoon.
Juma Khan Hamdard was the target of the botched assault that came soon after he reached his office from Kabul, the governor's spokesman Roohullah Samoon said.
The assailants were killed by Hamdard's bodyguards before they could reach him, Samoon told Pajhwok Afghan News. The would-be bombers were gunned down by security forces.
One witness said the assailants wanted to enter the municipality building at around 12 noon. Gunshots around the office and parts of the city were heard, he added.
Police recovered a rocket launcher, a Kalashnikov, a hand grenade and ammunition from the attackers, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Ghafar Sapi said.
