Security forces asked to prevent poppy cultivation
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The governor of southern Kandahar province on Sunday directed security officials to prevent poppy cultivation and enforce the law banning the illicit crop.
Addressing a meeting attended by 17 district chiefs and police officers, Governor Toryalai Weesa praised the government officials for resolving people's problems. However, he said public expectations were yet to be fully met.
The government's writ had been extended to remote areas during the last two years, enabling the people to travel, he claimed, saying police were able to operate there independently.
"Militants are no longer capable of face-to-face combat and are planting mines on roads to harm civilians," the governor said, asking the district chiefs not to travel outside their areas without permission from the authorities concerned.
