MAIMANA (PAN): A child was killed when a suicide bomber targeted the vehicle of an intelligence official, who was wounded along with six others, in the northern province of Faryab on Monday, officials said.

The bomber detonated his explosives next to the car carrying Syed Ahmad Sadat, the provincial chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS), in the Guzar Tatar Khana area in the 3rd police district at 8:10am.

Faryab police chief, Brig. Gen. Syed Ahmad Sami, told Pajhwok Afghan News a child was killed, while Sadat, his four guards and two civilians were injured in the explosion.

Public Health Director Dr. Abdul Ali Haleem confirmed receiving five injured people, including Sadat, and the dead child at Faryab Civil Hospital. The wounded people were taken to a health facility of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) for treatment, he said.

However, a spokesman for the 303rd Pamir Police Zone, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, said two children were killed and Sadat injured along with four bodyguards. Some civilians also suffered casualties in the blast.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said the explosion occurred when the NDS chief was on his way to the office. The blast killed six guards of Sadat, who was evacuated to a foreign troops’ facility in critical condition, Ahmadi claimed.
