KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Monday ordered an investigation into civilian deaths during a nighttime operation by international troops in the central province of Maidan Wardak.

NATO-led soldiers killed three relatives a former senator, Sami Jan Sherzad, and detained two others during the raid in the Momad village of Gardan Masjid Valley in Chak district late on Saturday night

Noor Agha, a nephew of Sherzad, was killed along with two daughters, aged 18 and 20 years, by the troops air-dropped in the area. “The soldiers opened fire from the rooftop of the house at sleeping people,” said a relative of the victims.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Karzai had been shocked by the latest civilian fatalities. He has appointed a team to visit the area, probe the incident and submit its report to the president.
