PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): A 300-member local police force embarked on its duty in the Dahna-i-Ghori district of northern Baghlan province on Monday, officials said.

Controlled by the Ministry of Interior, the NATO-supported force started work after a ceremony, attended by Local Police Commander Gen. Ali Shah Ahmadzai.

In support of regular security personnel, the force members were deployed to remote and insecure areas of the province, Ahmadzai said, adding each local policeman would be paid up to 9,000 afghanis in monthly salary.

Provincial council head, Rassoul Mohseni, said the force would not be effective without consultations with tribal elders.

Mullah Alam, a local police commander in the Dand-i-Ghori district, promised they would spare no effort in bringing security to the area.
