KABUL (PAN): Around 400 religious scholars on Wednesday sat a competency examination for certificates from the Ministry of Education, an official said.
Deputy Education Minister Dr. Shafiq Samim told Pajhwok Afghan News the participants, hailing from different provinces, had acquired Islamic education in private institutions or seminaries abroad.
Samim said 230 candidates took the test for 12th grade certificates and the rest for 14th grade degrees. Nearly 65,000 clerics have taken competency tests over the past 10 years, he added, explaining around 30,000 secured 12th grade or 14th grade certificates.
According to the Ministry of Education, there are 775 Holy Quran Recitation Centres, 58 Islamic studies centres and 614 seminaries across the country and more than 70,000 students, including 5,000 women, are studying there.
