Sangin-Kajaki road reopens after 5-year closure

Oct 22, 2011 - 14:11

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A key highway, which was kept closed by militants for five years, has been reopened in southern Helmand province, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Saturday.

Linking Sangin and Kajaki districts of the province, the road reopened as a result of a joint offensive by Afghan and NATOinfo-icon-led forces, a statement from the ministry said.

With the operation still ongoing, the joint force is setting up checkpoints along the highway. At least, 21 insurgents were killed and five others wounded during the operation, which also led to the seizure of 47 anti-tanks mine.
