FAIZABAD (PAN): A newly-constructed building for the water supply department was inaugurated in northern Badakhshan province on Saturday, officials said.
Funded by the Ministry of Water and Energy, the building cost $800,000 and took two and a half years to complete, Deputy Water and Energy Minister Shujauddin Ziayee said.
The two-storey structure has 14 rooms, a library, a kitchen, corridor and a conference hall, the water supply department head, Eng. Mohammad Rafi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Resident Ghulam Hazrat said: “We have been deprived of electricity, despite the fact that Kukcha River has enough water that could be harnessed.”
The ministry has launched feasibility studies at seven points of the river for the construction of power dams, Ziayee said. The river has the potential to produce 2,000 megawatts of electricity. However, he said they needed funds to construct dams.
