KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The newly-appointed mayor of southern Kandahar province on Monday vowed to follow in his predecessor's footsteps in completing ongoing development projects.
Qazi Mohammad Omar was introduced at a special ceremony in Kandahar City, where the former mayor, Ghulam Haider Hamidi, was killed in a suicide attack in July, when an assailant entered the municipality compound with explosives concealed in his turban.
Omar said he would follow Hamidi's policies. Keeping the environment, streets and marketplaces clean and protecting parks would be his priority, he added.
The implementation of a master plan and preservation of all historical sites and monuments in Kandahar City would be ensured, he pledged, seeking cooperation from residents.
A number of tribal elders and government officials spoke on the occasion. Information and Culture Director Abdul Qayyum Patyal urged the mayor to focus on protecting historical places.
