Jawzjan govt depts rife with graft: governor
SHIRBARGHAN (PAN): The governor of northern Jawzjan province, promising to root out corruption, said on Wednesday three provincial government departments were rife with graft.
Mohammad Alem Sayee told a meeting that several officials, including the justice department chiefs and prosecutors, had been sacked on corruption charges, but the menace continued unabated.
He hoped the problem would be overcome with recruitment of fresh and honest officials. Stressing more efforts to cleanse the prosecutor's office and the justice department of graft, he said most of corruption was committed in courts.
The appellant court chief, Qazi Khudayar, did not deny the charges, but promised to resolve the issue gradually. He said two employees of the department had been fired for absenteeism.
Justice department chief, Nasratullah Hotak, said efforts were underway to bring reforms to the system. "In the past, we had many problems, but now we have implemented a new set of work ethics," he said.
Meanwhile, Habibullah Dastgirzada, the prosecutor, said they had resolved their problems to some extent. He added more measures would be taken to root out corruption as soon as possible.
