Over 21 tonnes of drugs, explosives seized in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Police have detained 11 suspected smugglers with more than 21,000 kilograms of narcotics and explosives in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Wednesday.

Governor Toryalai Wesa and police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Razzaq, told reporters a total of 21,200 kg of drugs and explosives were recovered during operations in the province.

The seizure of heroin, morphine, sodium carbonate and ammonium nitrate came in the third police district of the provincial capital as a result of a two-day operation by police and Special Forces.

Preliminary interrogations showed 10 of the detainees were hired workers and one a drug smuggler, Razzaq said, adding the narcotics were being smuggled to Farah and Nimroz provinces.

According to the police chief, three militants were killed and two others detained during separate operations last week.

Militants had training camps in Kandahar and Zabul provinces near the Pakistan border, Gen. Razzaq said. The neighbouring county has promised to take action to dismantle the camps.

“The camps in Badini and Qamaruddin Karez areas in the Zabul province and Maroof and Shorabak districts of Kandahar are close to Pakistani posts. But they have shut their eyes over the camps,” he concluded.
