KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Two border policemen were sentenced to death and four others to different prison terms in southern Kandahar province on Saturday, an official said.
Accused of killing six civilians on charges of having ties to the insurgents and misusing their authority, the border guards were convicted by the provincial court of appeal as a result of an open trial.
Based in the border town of Spin Boldak, the convicted policemen included a security checkpoint commander and his brother, the governor’s spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Zalmay Ayubi said two policemen, guarding the same post, were sentenced to 20 years in jail. The remaining two were awarded jail terms of 13 and three years.
Appellant Court Judge Abdul Khaliq said the convicts could appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court, whose judgment would be implemented immediately.
